The Phantom and Cricket
The comic book hero The Phantom may not have been known for playing cricket, but the name has a great cricket connection.
Legendary Australian opening batsman and commentator Bill Lawry was famously nicknamed “The Phantom” as a teenager.
As the story goes, Lawry was sent to buy drinks before a train left during a South Australian tour. Instead, he returned with a pile of magazines and a copy of The Phantom comic. His teammates gave him the nickname on the spot, and it stayed with him for the rest of his cricket life.
